Create an installation (USB) disk for Mac OS X Mavericks

You can create an installable USB drive by:

– downloading the Install OX Mavericks.app from the AppStore
– having a blank SD card (MacBookPro) or USB flash drive with at least 8 GB capacity

Fire up DiskUtility (in Applications/Utilities) and create a MacOS Extended (Journaled) Partition. Call it whatever you want. For the sake of simplicity, I called it Untitled. It will be mounted by DiskUtilitiy after format.

Now type the following command into Terminal:

sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia –volume /Volumes/Untitled –applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app –nointeraction

The command will erase the disk and copy the install files to the disk. Give it some time, and your volume will soon be loaded up with not just the OS X installer, but also an external recovery partition that may come in handy if your hard drive dies or you need to verify or replace your disk.
